Times that hurt are the best for growth.
Do you feel like everything is going wrong in your life right now? Do you feel you’re trapped with no glimpse escape? Do you feel that you are living a more turbulent life than everyone else around you?
I used to believe that life was supposed to be a smooth journey. I thought that if my life wasn’t sunshine and roses, I was failing my job as a human being.
The Roman emperor and stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius shared this belief and cautioned himself against it. In Meditations, he questioned himself, saying:
“So you were born to feel ‘nice’? Instead of doing things and experiencing them? Don’t you see the plants, the birds, the ants and spiders and bees going about their individual tasks, putting the world in order, as best they can? And you’re not willing to do your job as a human being?”
Our job as human beings is not much different than the birds, ants, and spiders. Each of us is called to put the world in order, taking the chaos we experience and transforming it into peace for ourselves and those around us.
Parents put the chaos of life in order to provide shelter for their children to develop peacefully. Leaders put the chaos of business in order to allow their teams to thrive in a peaceful work environment. And us, the normal human beings of every day, are expected to do the same for ourselves.
If your life is in total chaos, recognize that you are exactly where you’re supposed to be.
This moment was created for you to thrive. The weight that life is handing you right now is a barbell to grow your peacemaking muscles. Don’t be disturbed that things are out of place because when things are out of place, they are just where they should be.
